How to identify the House Sparrow

Small brown and gray birds; males have a black bib and chestnut markings. They stay close to buildings year-round.

Behavior & biology

They nest in almost any protected cavity — sign lettering, soffit gaps, vents, and ledges — and raise multiple broods a year, aggressively defending sites.

Why House Sparrows are a problem

Bulky nests clog vents and lit signage (a fire risk), droppings foul entrances, and their nesting debris and mites become an ongoing nuisance.
