Canine detection has a credibility problem: some companies quote the best-case laboratory figure as if it were a guarantee. Honest operators cite both numbers, because the gap between them is the whole story.
Controlled conditions: 97.5% detection, 0% false positives
In a 2008 University of Florida study (Pfiester, Koehler & Pereira, published in the Journal of Economic Entomology), trained dogs located live bed bugs with 97.5% accuracy and did not alert to dead bugs, cast skins, or feces — a 0% false-positive rate under controlled conditions. That study established what a well-trained detection dog is actually capable of.
Field conditions: closer to 44%, with wide variance
A 2014 field study (Cooper and colleagues) tested working teams in occupied housing and found a mean detection rate near 44%, false positives around 15%, and — most importantly — large variation across the eleven teams evaluated. The lesson isn’t that dogs don’t work. It’s that the accuracy you get depends heavily on the specific team you hire.
Why the gap — and what actually drives accuracy
The distance between 97.5% and 44% has almost nothing to do with the dog’s nose and almost everything to do with three things: handler skill, blind-test discipline, and certification maintenance. A dog that isn’t routinely proofed against clean rooms drifts toward alerting wherever its handler expects bugs — an unconscious cue. A team that never runs blind trials cannot know its own false-positive rate. And scent detection is a perishable skill: without ongoing maintenance training, accuracy decays.
