Bulk product, structural voids, and constant ingress make grain storage, feed mills, and agricultural facilities among the hardest environments in the industry to inspect visually.

Why is rodent control so difficult in grain and feed facilities?

Because the product is the food source, the harborage, and the visual obstruction simultaneously. Bulk grain, feed, and stored commodities give rodents unlimited food and unlimited cover in the same space, while conveyors, legs, pits, and elevator structures create voids that cannot be inspected. Add continuous truck and rail ingress and seasonal pressure from surrounding fields, and monitoring devices around the perimeter of a space cannot tell you what is living inside it.

What makes these facilities different

In a food plant, product is contained and rodents are looking for a way to it. In a grain operation, they are already in it. Three conditions compound:

Unlimited harborage inside the commodity.

Rodents nest in bulk product. Devices placed around the room monitor traffic; they do not detect a population living inside the pile.

Structural voids by design.

Boot pits, elevator legs, conveyor housings, tunnel systems, and headhouse structures are impossible to visually inspect at any meaningful depth and are precisely where established populations settle.

Seasonal exterior pressure.

Harvest and cold weather drive migration off surrounding ground. A perimeter that holds in July fails in October, and burrow systems establish along foundations, pads, and bin bases.

Where FSMA fits

Facilities under FDA and FSMA preventive controls, and those audited against GFSI schemes or AIB standards, carry the same documentation burden as any food manufacturer — risk assessment, device mapping, activity records, trending, and corrective actions with demonstrated closure. Devices count traffic. They do not find populations.

A monitoring network measures rodents moving through the spaces where devices sit. In an environment where the commodity itself is both food and shelter, a substantial population can live and breed without ever crossing a device in meaningful numbers.

This is why grain facilities so often see a modest, stable capture trend alongside recurring contamination and gnaw damage. The trend is not wrong — it is just measuring the wrong thing. A detection sweep searches the harborage directly.

How we work a grain operation

  1. Exterior and bin-pad survey. Foundations, bin bases, equipment slabs, rail and truck approaches, and grounds — prime Norway rat burrow locations, worked before harvest intake and ahead of the first cold snap.
  2. Interior and structural voids. Boot pits, elevator legs, conveyor housings, tunnels, and headhouse structures — the voids where established populations settle and visual inspection cannot reach.
  3. Commodity odor mapping. The dog works live rodent odor emanating from the commodity and surrounding structure, showing where the population is concentrated so remediation is targeted rather than facility-wide.
  4. Confirmation and documentation. Every alert handler-confirmed, photographed, and located, with combustible-dust and confined-space protocols coordinated in advance.
  5. Findings report and verification. An auditor-ready report that drops into your FSMA and GFSI documentation, followed by a verification sweep after remediation.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dog work around bulk grain and dust?

Yes. Detection dogs work in dusty, odor-heavy environments routinely. We coordinate on dust levels, combustible dust protocols, and confined-space restrictions before arrival, and we schedule around loading and unloading where required.

Can you detect rodents living inside a grain pile?

We detect live rodent odor emanating from the commodity and surrounding structure. That tells you where the population is concentrated so remediation is targeted, rather than treating the whole facility uniformly.

When is the best time to schedule?

Before harvest intake and again ahead of the first cold snap. Those are the two windows where exterior populations move and where finding established harborage early prevents it from being sealed inside with the commodity.

Do you handle burrow systems around bins and pads?

Do you work with our current provider, or replace them?
