Why do Norway rat burrow treatments keep failing?
Because most treatments are applied to the openings you can see. A completed Norway rat burrow usually has a primary entrance plus one or two escape holes, frequently concealed under vegetation or debris and lightly plugged with soil from the inside. If you bait or gas the visible entrance while the colony holds an exit you never found, the rats relocate and re-establish nearby. The treatment was not the failure — the mapping was.
The problem with treating what you can see
Norway rats are ground-burrowing animals by nature. Dropped into a commercial setting with reliable food, they do what they have always done: dig along foundations, fence lines, equipment pads, dumpster corrals, and grade breaks, and build a system.
A new burrow may hold a single rat or a family unit of a dozen or more. Left alone, one or two burrows become a dozen, and a dozen becomes an established system that runs the length of a property line. Three things make these systems resistant to conventional treatment:
Bolt holes are designed to be hidden.
The escape openings are the point of the architecture — they exist so the colony survives a predator entering the main entrance or the system flooding. They are placed under cover and plugged from inside.
You cannot tell active from abandoned by looking.
A burrow field of fifteen openings might have four active systems. Treating all fifteen wastes product and, more importantly, tells you nothing about whether you actually hit the colony.
Gas treatments depend entirely on the seal.
Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide burrow treatments work by displacing oxygen throughout the tunnel system. That only works if the system is closed. An unfound bolt hole vents the treatment and the rats walk out of it.
What the dog does that a technician cannot
A technician inspecting a burrow field is reading visual evidence: open holes, runways, droppings, grease marks, disturbed soil. All of that is real, and all of it is aftermath.
A detection dog is reading live rodent odor moving through the soil and venting from openings — including openings that are plugged, concealed under debris, or simply too well-hidden to find on foot. That is how you separate an active system from an abandoned one, and how you locate the bolt hole before you seal the entrance rather than after the treatment fails.
Map first. Treat second. In that order the treatment usually only has to happen once.
How we work a burrow system
- Perimeter survey. We work the full exterior — foundations, fence lines, grade breaks, dumpster and compactor areas, equipment pads, landscaping, and any adjacent property line contributing pressure.
- Canine mapping. The dog works the burrow field and indicates on active systems. Every alert is confirmed by the handler and marked. Concealed and plugged openings get located and flagged — those are the ones that determine whether treatment succeeds.
- Active/inactive classification. You get a documented distinction between systems in use and systems abandoned. This alone typically reduces the treatment footprint substantially and gives you a defensible record of what was treated and why.
- Treatment. Where you engage us to act on what we find, we self-perform burrow treatment in states where we hold licensure and coordinate with your licensed provider or our vetted local partners elsewhere, matching the method to the site and the sensitivity of the setting. - Harborage and sanitation findings. Burrows persist because something is sustaining them. Our report identifies the food, water, and harborage conditions feeding the system, because eliminating those is what stops it from rebuilding.
- Verification sweep. We re-run the survey after treatment and exclusion — documented evidence the system is gone, not an assumption.
Frequently asked questions
How do you tell an active burrow from an abandoned one?
The dog does. Live rodent odor vents from an occupied system and does not from an empty one. Visual indicators like fresh soil or clear runways help but are unreliable — an abandoned burrow can look active for weeks and a heavily-used burrow under cover can look like nothing at all.
Can you find burrows under concrete, decking, or equipment pads?
Frequently, yes. Rats routinely tunnel beneath slabs, pads, and decking, entering at grade breaks and expansion joints. These are among the hardest systems to find visually and among the most common places we alert.
Do you handle burrows on adjacent property?
We can survey and document them, but we cannot treat property we do not have authorization for. This comes up constantly on industrial sites — the source is next door. Having it documented gives you something to bring to the neighboring operator or the municipality.
Is burrow treatment safe around wildlife, pets, and staff?
It depends entirely on method. Rodenticide applied to burrows carries real non-target and secondary-poisoning considerations and must be applied by a licensed applicator following the label. Carbon dioxide treatment leaves no toxic residue and carries no secondary poisoning risk, which is why it has become the preferred approach in public and sensitive settings.
We already treat our burrows every month. Why would detection help?
If you are treating monthly and still have burrows, the system is probably larger than what you are treating. Recurring treatment on a partial map is the single most common pattern we are called in to break.
